A yet-to-be-identified motorist was reportedly shot dead on Sunday by operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service along the Osogbo–Iwo Road in Osun State.
The incident occurred around 10 a.m. at the Onibueja area of Ido-Osun, close to a police checkpoint.
A video from the scene showed the victim’s vehicle riddled with bullet holes as residents gathered around the car and demanded an investigation into the killing.
Witnesses said the security operatives, who were dressed in plain clothes, allegedly chased the driver from the Iwo end of the road before opening fire on his vehicle.
A resident of the area, who identified himself simply as Sunday for security reasons, said the victim died instantly behind the steering wheel after the shooting.
According to him, the development drew a large crowd of residents who expressed anger over the incident.
“The man was driving from the Iwo side towards Osogbo when some security men in mufti started shooting at his vehicle. He died inside the car.
The vehicle was riddled with bullets, and people quickly gathered at the scene.
“The incident happened close to a police roadblock, but those who shot him were not in uniform, so we could not immediately tell who they were,” the resident said.
When contacted, the Osun State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that the suspected shooters were operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abiodun Ojelabi, disclosed that two persons had been arrested in connection with the incident.
