An Upper Area Court sitting in Mararaba, Nasarawa State, has dissolved the marriage between Aisha Salisu and her husband, Abubakar Isah, following his prolonged absence and alleged neglect spanning six years.
The court, presided over by Judge Adamu Haruna, granted the dissolution in line with Islamic law after Salisu petitioned for separation on grounds of abandonment, lack of care, and absence of affection.
In her submission, Salisu told the court that her husband, whom she married under Sharia law, had failed in his marital obligations, including providing for her basic needs such as feeding, clothing, and healthcare. She added that Isah had been away for six years without adequate support or communication.
The petitioner, who resides in Anguwan Hashimu in Mararaba—within the court’s jurisdiction—urged the court to end the marriage, citing emotional distress and prolonged neglect.
Responding to the claims, Isah did not dispute the allegations.
He explained that his absence was due to his efforts to secure better financial means.
However, he consented to the dissolution and formally pronounced divorce in accordance with Islamic law.
Delivering judgment, Haruna upheld the petitioner’s request and ordered both parties to part ways.

He further directed Salisu to observe a three-month waiting period before entering into another marriage, as prescribed under Islamic law.
