The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 40 year old man, Clement Anthony, over the alleged killing of a community leader in Bauchi metropolis.
The command said the suspect was apprehended shortly after the incident, while a locally made single barrel firearm and an expended cartridge believed to have been used in the attack were recovered from him.
The deceased, Jacob Bature, 55, was the Mai Anguwa of Unguwar Ngas in the Inkil area of Bauchi Local Government Area.
Police authorities said the incident occurred at about 7 p.m. on Sunday when the suspect allegedly shot the community leader, leaving him with severe injuries to the rib area.
Following a distress report received at about 8:30 p.m. by officers at the ‘A’ Division Township Police Station, a patrol team was immediately deployed to the scene.
The victim was evacuated to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, where medical personnel confirmed him dead on arrival. His remains have been deposited in the hospital morgue pending an autopsy.
According to the police, the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation, while the suspect is expected to face prosecution upon the conclusion of the probe.
Reacting to the incident, the Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, Sani Omolori Aliyu, condemned the killing and assured residents that those responsible would be brought to justice.
He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to combating violent crimes across the state and warned against the unlawful possession of firearms.

The commissioner also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or activities to the nearest police station.
