A heavy-duty trailer conveying iron rods crashed into the perimeter fence of the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, Abia State, in the early hours of Thursday after reportedly developing a mechanical fault while ascending a hill.
The accident occurred along the Umuahia–Ikot Ekpene Expressway near Finbarrs Road, close to the Abia State High Court, triggering severe traffic congestion on the busy route.
According to information gathered, the trailer lost compression while climbing the hill, causing the vehicle to roll backwards uncontrollably before slamming into the hospital’s fence.
The driver of the trailer, who declined to disclose his identity, said the incident happened around 2:00 a.m.
He explained that the vehicle developed the fault while navigating the incline, leaving him unable to regain control before the trailer crashed into the fence.
The impact left the articulated vehicle partially blocking the federal highway, resulting in heavy traffic during the morning rush hour as motorists struggled to pass through the affected section.
As of the time of filing this report, there was no official confirmation of deaths or injuries linked to the accident.
