As is fast becoming the norm in Nigeria, voter apathy has reared its ugly head again as residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) vote in the Area Council Elections.
Prompt News reports that accreditation and voting have already commenced across the six FCT Area Councils of Abaji, Kwali, Kuje, Bwari, Gwagwalada and Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) as at the time of this report.
For example, voting commenced early at Garki area of AMAC, specifically at the Polling Unit EC 3O A&B on Lagos street, Drumsticks outlet where accreditation and voting started by 8:45 am on Saturday, February 12, 2022.
But, voter apathy has reared its ugly head again as most of the Polling Units (PU) visited earlier in the morning have few or no single voters at sight.
Some of the places where voters have not turned out at all are Kuje Central especially the PUs behind Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
It was also the same situation at Kabusa and Lokogoma areas in AMAC; Rubochi in Kuje; Kutunku in Gwagwalada and Ushafa area of Gwari Area Council.
However, our investigations have revealed that most FCT residents who have their voters card do not know where to cast their votes as most of the Pulling Stations where they voted in the 2019 General Elections have been decentralised by INEC, since the creation of Polling Units.
Babaji Musa, an eligible voter who resides at Dakwo in Galadimawa area of AMAC insists that he does not think he will travel two miles to Kabusa village on foot to cast his vote because of restriction of movement.
He claimed that neither the candidates of political parties nor INEC and AMAC sensitized the residents on where to cast their votes during the Area Council Elections.
