Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has revealed that he was once offered the opportunity to perform a voodoo ritual to secure his governorship position, but he refused.
Diri made this revelation during the Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area (KOLGA) Annual Day of Thanksgiving in Sampou, his hometown.
According to Diri, a prominent Nigerian elder invited him to Abuja in 2020, where he suggested that Diri perform certain rituals if he wanted to become governor.
However, Diri said he rejected the offer, placing his full trust in God.
The event occurred during his challenge of the November 2019 Bayelsa governorship election results, which had declared the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate as the winner. The case was still pending in the Supreme Court at the time.
He explained, “I thank God and also thank Apostle David Zilly Aggrey, who initiated this event. Through his prayers, God made it possible for me to emerge, and today, it is by law that all Kolokuma/Opokuma people can gather to praise God.”
Diri continued, “Let me tell you why it’s important to thank God and have faith in Him. Some time ago, a senior citizen invited me to Abuja and suggested I perform certain sacrifices, but I declined. I told him my faith in God would not allow me to do that. He was angry and insisted that I would never become governor. He told me he had spent $10,000 on the sacrifice and demanded a refund, which I gave him. When the Supreme Court’s decision came, he was stunned and couldn’t reach out to me. Unfortunately, he passed away not long after.”
Diri added that the incident was witnessed by his deputy and a friend, both of whom accompanied him to visit the elder in Abuja.
The governor concluded, “Kolokuma/Opokuma people have every reason to thank God. As a state, we don’t want anyone harmed in the name of politics because we don’t know who God has destined for greatness. I urge us all in politics to be civil and recognize that God rules over the affairs of man.”
It is important to note that Diri became governor after the Supreme Court annulled the results of the 2019 Bayelsa gubernatorial election and ordered that he be issued a certificate of return.
He was sworn in as the governor on February 14, 2020, and was re-elected in 2023.
