An alleged operator of an illegal University, David Iornem, was on Thursday arraigned by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) before a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja. The accused person is standing trial on a three-count charge filed against him by ICPC, bothering on fraudulent collection of the sum of $17,300 from three different people to secure admission into the University. The leadership of the Nigerian Community in Turkey (NICOT) has called on President Goodlcuk Jonathan to ignore the recent call for the recall of the Ambassador to Turkey, Ahmed Abdulhamid Mallammadori by people it described as disgruntled. US intelligence leaker Edward Snowden has left the Moscow airport where he has been staying since June after being granted temporary asylum. He left unobserved after receiving, his lawyer said, the necessary papers to enter Russian territory from Sheremetyevo Airport’s transit zone. The US has charged Mr Snowden with leaking details of its electronic surveillance programmes. Russia’s decision is likely to further strain its ties with the US. Eight persons, including a lecturer at the College of Education, Waka, Biu Local Government Area of Borno State (names withheld) were, yesterday, slaughtered by suspected Boko Haram members. Vote counting has begun in Zimbabwe’s presidential and parliamentary elections. Turnout was high in a fierce contest between President Robert Mugabe’s Zanu-PF and PM Morgan Tsvangirai’s MDC. Some polling stations remained open into the evening to allow those already queuing at closing time to cast votes. Members of Uruguay’s House of Representatives have passed a bill to legalise marijuana. If it goes on to be approved by the Senate, Uruguay will become the first country to regulate the production, distribution and sale of marijuana.
