A 77-year-old man has died after being attacked by a kangaroo he kept as a pet, Australian media reported, in what they said would be the first fatal kangaroo attack since 1936.
Local media reported that paramedics were called to the man’s property in Redmond, some 400 kilometres southeast of Perth in Western Australia on Sunday afternoon.
He was apparently attacked by a kangaroo that he was keeping as a pet.
Broadcaster nine news reported that a family member had found the kangaroo’s owner seriously injured and that the animal became violent and prevented paramedics from approaching the man.
Local media cited police as saying they had been forced to put the marsupial down to allow first responders to treat the man, who later died at the scene.
The last reported fatal kangaroo attack was in 1936, when, according to Australian media, a 38-year-old man was killed by a kangaroo in New South Wales. (dpa/NAN)
