The Anambra State Government has shut down a brothel in Amawbia, Awka South Local Government Area, as part of its Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA) initiative.
The brothel, whose name has been withheld, was reportedly a hotspot for illegal activities, including the exploitation of underaged girls, drug trafficking, and harboring criminals such as armed robbers.
During the raid conducted by OCHA operatives, 10 sex workers, including minors, were rescued. The operation followed weeks of monitoring and intelligence gathering on the activities at the location.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Managing Director of OCHA Brigade, Celestine Anere, explained that the operation aimed to curb the rising cases of criminality linked to the facility.
“This action was taken after intelligence reports confirmed that the brothel was enabling a wide range of illegal activities, from underaged prostitution to drug trafficking and serving as a hideout for armed robbers,” Anere said.
He further assured the public that efforts are underway to apprehend and prosecute the operators of the brothel to serve as a deterrent to others.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to tackling crime and ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens.
