Those expecting to see Nigeria’s Super Falcons squad list for the 14th edition of the biggest continental women’s football tournament Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) holding in Morocco from July 25 to August 16, 2026 in the media soon will have to wait for some time, Prompt News reports.
This is even as the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) said it is carefully following the Confederation of African Football (CAF) timelines on the submission of the squad list and arrival of the teams to the competition hotels in Morocco.
According to an official who pleaded anonymity, NFF is not in any hurry to announce the Super Falcons squad list when the coaching crew has not assessed each of the players invited to camp for the competition, arguing that naming the squad list is not for the optic or
public perception.
The officer stated that the federation will do the right thing at the appropriate time, insisting that the handlers would have to have a closer look at the players invited to camp, and assess players readiness before drawing up the final list which will be submitted to CAF headquarters in Cairo.
“We are not under duress to announce our squad list just because other countries are releasing their lists. We are within the time frame. What happens if you name your squad and somehow key players get injured? Look, we have been in this business for a long time and know how things work”, said the anonymous.
Meanwhile, only a few countries out of 16, including Ghana, Morocco, Algeria, Malawi, and South Africa, have made public only their provisional list of players invited for the upcoming WAFCON while 11 nations, amongst them Nigeria, Cameroon, Mali, Senegal, Zambia, etc are yet to announce their WAFCON 2026 squad list.
