A housekeeper and a driver have been arraigned before a Kaduna Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing $3,000 and valuables worth N2m from their employer after entering her bedroom while she was away at work.
The defendants, Janet Daniel, 25, and Stephen Adams, 29, were arraigned on Wednesday on charges of conspiracy, robbery and theft.
The duo, who reside in Goni-gora, Kaduna, allegedly committed the offences on October 20 in the Barnawa area of the state, alongside two other suspects who are still at large.
The prosecutor, Chidi Leo, told the court that the defendants worked for the complainant, Blessing Christian, before allegedly stealing the money, jewellery, bags and clothes valued at N2m.
According to the prosecutor, the defendants entered their employer’s bedroom while she was at work and took the items without knowing that their activities had been captured by a closed-circuit television camera installed in the house.
Leo said the defendants were subsequently arrested by the police and allegedly confessed to the crime during interrogation.
The prosecutor said the alleged offences contravened Sections 58 and 217 of the Kaduna State Penal Code, 2017.
However, both defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.
In his ruling, Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel granted them bail in the sum of N500,000 each, with two sureties each in like sum.
The magistrate directed that one of the sureties for each defendant must be a blood relation and that all sureties must be gainfully employed.
