Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has directed the state Attorney General to withdraw the legal action instituted against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over the freezing of the state government’s bank account.
Adeleke disclosed this during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics shortly after he was declared winner of the August 15 governorship election.
The governor said he decided to end the dispute following an intervention by President Bola Tinubu, who he said personally contacted him.
Asked whether he was ready to move beyond the political disagreement and the court case against the anti-graft agency, Adeleke said he had already instructed his legal team to discontinue the matter.
“I’m putting them behind. What else do I want? I have instructed my Attorney General to drop it. Mr. President has done well. He called me. What more do I want?” he said.
The governor had earlier challenged the EFCC’s decision to freeze the state government’s account, describing the action as politically motivated and capable of hampering the operations of his administration.
The account restriction became a major political issue after it was imposed shortly before the Osun governorship election.
Following the development, Tinubu directed the EFCC to lift the restriction on the state government’s account and halt the related legal proceedings.
Speaking on reports that some members of his administration and supporters had been invited by the EFCC for questioning, Adeleke said he had mobilised his lawyers to assist those affected.
“Well, we have been talking. I have been calling all my lawyers to go there. I’m sure the APC in Osun, according to them, they are telling us they are using federal might,” the governor stated.
