English actor and comedian Russell Brand has been officially charged with rape, indecent assault, and sexual assault, following allegations related to incidents between 1999 and 2005.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed the charges after launching an investigation in September 2023, prompted by multiple complaints. Authorities are urging anyone affected by these events to come forward and engage with the police.
“The women who have made reports continue to receive support from specially trained officers,” stated Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy of the Metropolitan Police.
He added, “The Met’s investigation remains open, and detectives ask anyone who has been affected by this case or has any relevant information to come forward and speak with police. A dedicated team of investigators is available via email at CIT@met.police.uk.”
Brand faces five charges, including one for rape, one for oral rape, one for indecent assault, and two for sexual assault. The accusations involve four separate women.
The alleged incidents include a sexual assault in Westminster, London, in 2001, and the rape of another woman in Bournemouth in 1999. Additionally, the 49-year-old is charged with sexually assaulting a woman in Westminster between 2004 and 2005, along with committing oral rape and sexual assault against another woman in 2004.
“We carefully reviewed the evidence after a police investigation into allegations made following the broadcast of a Channel 4 documentary in September 2023,” said Jaswant Narwal, the prosecutor.
“We have concluded that Russell Brand should be charged with offences including rape, sexual assault, and indecent assault.”
“The Crown Prosecution Service reminds everyone that criminal proceedings are active, and the defendant has the right to a fair trial. It is extremely important that there be no reporting, commentary, or sharing of information online that could in any way prejudice these proceedings,” Narwal added.
Brand has denied all accusations and is scheduled to appear in court on May 2. He addressed the charges on his X account, stating on Friday, “What I never was, was a rapist. I’ve never engaged in non-consensual activity.”
