LAFIA – By Alhaji Mohammed Concerned Nasarawa State Elders have declared support for the downward review of the salary of workers in the state, calling on labour union to call off the strike in the overall interest of the people.
Chairman of the Concerned Elders, Yahaya Bello made the appeal on Tuesday at a press conference in Lafia, positing aying that the downward review would help in developing other sectors.
He added that the adjustment made by Nasarawa state government is far reasonable since it is still above the minimum wage.
“Both sides must understand that wage reviews and negotiations are continuous processes if the state is to continue to witness progress,” he said.
While recognising the right of organised Labour to call for a strike to press home their demands from the government or their employers, he however noted that the present impasse between the government and organized labour in the state needed to be understood properly by all the stakeholders.
Yahaya Bello explained further that the group was compelled to comment on the situation due to some unpatriotic statements being made by some members of the labour union and even some disgruntled politicians on the current labour crisis in some newspapers.
He therefore, advised the labour Union in the state to consider the interest of the majority of people by accepting the realities of time and co-operate with the state government for the overall development and progress of the state.
