Panic has spread among motorists and residents following an attack by suspected gunmen on passengers travelling along the Onitsha-Owerri Road in Imo State.
The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday, October 1, with eyewitnesses claiming that the attackers blocked the highway and stopped several vehicles, including two buses.
According to accounts circulating online, the gunmen forced passengers out of the vehicles before taking several of them into nearby areas.
Videos from the scene showed vehicles stranded on the road, while debris was reportedly used to obstruct traffic and prevent motorists from passing through the area.
An eyewitness who posted about the incident alleged that the attackers were armed Fulani gunmen.
The eyewitness claimed that the assailants attacked and robbed passengers travelling from Lagos towards the Anambra-Owerri axis before abducting several occupants of two buses.
He said the incident occurred along the Owerri Road leading to the Anambra Expressway, adding that the attackers fled the scene with the abducted passengers.
The development reportedly caused panic among motorists and other road users, with some travellers said to have stopped their journeys following the attack.
As of the time of filing this report, there was no official statement from the Imo State Police Command confirming the number of persons abducted or providing details of any rescue operation.

The identities of the victims and the whereabouts of the abducted passengers also remained unclear.
