Nollywood actor Zuby Michael has offered his perspective on why some Igbo talents struggle to receive support from industry executives and gatekeepers.
Speaking in an interview with Broadway TV, the actor suggested that some industry figures are reluctant to mentor or invest in Igbo creatives because they fear the talents could quickly surpass them and eventually become competitors.
Michael argued that Igbo people are generally quick to learn and can build successful businesses after acquiring the necessary skills within a short period.
He said, “Igbo people are fast learners and they are capable of making it big with just a little. You might decide to mentor an Igbo person and what took you 10 years to learn, he will learn it in one year and six months.
“And if you don’t treat him well, he will leave you and start doing the same business you taught him and become your competition. So, people are scared of that.”

Prompt News reports the actor further claimed that the reluctance to support Igbo talents was not limited to people from other ethnic groups, noting that some Igbo industry executives also shared similar concerns.
“Industry executives, including some Igbos, don’t like supporting Igbos because they feel like they will get betrayed by their mentee outshining them,” he explained.
