Falconets striker Janet Akekoromowei is on the verge of joining Portuguese champions Benfica on a long-term contract, Prompt News Online reports.
The move marks a significant milestone in Akekoromowei’s career after overcoming a major injury setback.
The 18-year-old sustained an injury Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifying fixture against Senegal in Abeokuta in February.
Before the injury setback, she was on the verge of sealing a move to Barcelona Femeni.
Akekoromowei is now set to begin her sojourn in Europe after recovering from the injury.
The striker was the Most Valuable Player in the Nigeria Women Football League, NWFL, last year.
The former Bayelsa Queens star was part of Falconets squad to the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia and played three matches during the tournament.
Akekoromowei has also been capped at full international level by Nigeria.
