A devastating windstorm accompanied by heavy rainfall has claimed the life of a female food vendor and destroyed several properties in Obi Local Government Area of Benue State.
The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday in Obarike community along the Ogore axis of the council area, leaving residents in shock and mourning.
The victim, whose identity had yet to be confirmed as of press time, reportedly died after a massive tree uprooted by the storm collapsed on her during the downpour.
Residents said the woman, who was well known in the area for her food business, died on the spot, throwing the community into grief as sympathisers gathered at the scene in tears.
The violent storm also wreaked havoc across parts of the local government, destroying houses, shops and other business premises.
Fallen trees were said to have blocked the Secretariat Road near the Ijanke community, causing traffic disruption and panic among motorists and residents.
Chairman of Obi Local Government Area, Silas Odeh Ahunye, described the incident as one of the most severe natural disasters experienced in the area in recent years.
Ahunye disclosed that his residence was among properties affected by the storm, noting that the destruction caused by the heavy rainfall and strong winds was extensive.
