The Advocates Against Corruption in Public Service (AACPS), a Nigerian anti-corruption group, has alleged that Dr. Theo Onyuku, the acting Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Calabar, falsified his age and employment records.
The accusation was made in a petition addressed to the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare by Akiki Inam, legal representative of the group.
Inam claimed that Dr. Onyuku’s tenure as acting CMD is tainted by “questionable character and inconsistencies in his service records.”
According to the petition, discrepancies were found in the dates of birth recorded in Dr. Onyuku’s employment documents.
“His records with the hospital’s human resources department list three different dates of birth: June 20, 1965; June 20, 1967; and June 20, 1968,” Inam revealed.
He further explained that Dr. Onyuku’s employment record from 1997 indicates a birth date of June 20, 1965, while another record, personally completed by the acting CMD, lists June 20, 1967.
A curriculum vitae in his hospital file reportedly states his birth date as June 20, 1968.
Inam also accused Dr. Onyuku of providing inconsistent information regarding his qualifications and service history.
The lawyer noted that the CMD was employed as a resident doctor in 1997 but records show he only completed the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program in 2003, raising questions about his eligibility for the position at the time of employment.
“This inconsistency undermines the integrity of his appointment and calls for thorough investigation and appropriate sanctions,” Inam added, labeling the situation as “morally and legally questionable.”
When contacted for a response, Dr. Onyuku confirmed awareness of the allegations but declined to comment in detail.
“The matter is currently under investigation by the ministry. I will not preempt the outcome by responding now. By February, the facts will be made clear,” he stated, adding that leadership roles often attract opposition.
The petition has raised significant concerns, with many calling for a transparent review of Dr. Onyuku’s records to ensure accountability.
