Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has announced the dissolution of his 25-member cabinet, effective tonight, January 10, 2025.
The official announcement will take place during a Valedictory Dinner at 7 PM in the Banquet Hall of Government House in Uyo.
The move, which had been the subject of widespread speculation in government circles since Wednesday, marks a significant political development in the state.
Sources close to the matter confirmed that all commissioners would be relieved of their duties, and Governor Eno is set to appoint a new team of his choosing.
Some outgoing commissioners had anticipated the dissolution, especially towards the end of 2024. Governor Eno had previously hinted at this decision during a media interaction in September 2024, in commemoration of the state’s 37th anniversary.
At that time, he acknowledged the public’s calls for a cabinet shake-up, stating, “As a leader, you must understand when to act and when not to act. I know we should dissolve both the boards and the State Executive Council. Sixteen months into a new administration, you need to rejig the system.”
Governor Eno assured that the process would not be abrupt and emphasized that he would hold the Valedictory Dinner to express his gratitude to the outgoing executive council members for their service.
The dissolution is seen as a potential break from the influence of his predecessor, Governor Udom Emmanuel, with whom some citizens had believed Governor Eno shared control of state affairs.
This development suggests that Governor Eno is now poised to assert greater control over the administration and its future direction.
