The re-election bid of President Goodluck Jonathan Friday received a major boost as the ACCORD Party adopted him as the party’s candidate in the February 14 presidential election.
The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Nureini Adisa, while addressing a press conference in Abuja, said the party will mobilize for President Jonathan ahead of the election.
Adisa, who was in company of members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), said Jonathan, remained the best candidate for presidency.
Justifying the adoption, he said, “His (President Jonathan) bold step in convening the National Conference has portrayed him as a strong leader contrary to his perception by the opposition as a weak President.
“He is a strong defender of people’s rights and liberties and his administration is a hallmark of freedom of speech and association which are fundamental to the practice of democracy.”
He said the ACCORD Party believed that Jonathan “is giving his all in the fight against insurgency in the northeastern part of the country and has effectively rallied the entire country into seeing the terrorists as enemies of Nigeria.”
Jonathan, he stated, “has so far beaten all his predecessors in conducting free, fair and credible elections,” adding that he has “effectively integrated the women folk into the helm of affairs of governance and has even surpassed the provisions of affirmative action.”
“In consideration of all these achievements and many more too numerous to mention, the members of the National Working Committee of ACCORD could not agree less with our numerous candidates and supporters all over the nation that the problem of the nation does nto reside with Dr Goodluck Ebele Joanthan but with the followership that appears hoodwinked concerning his laudable achievements.
“In therefore adopting his as our preferred choice in the presidential election coming up on 14th February, we are enjoining our candidates nationwide to key into the decision of the NWC and go out en-mass to work towards the re-election of Dr Goodluck Jonathan and ensure his victory at the polls,” he said.
