Team captain, Success Makanjuola put Nigeria ahead in the first half from the spot after the center referee spotted infringement against Tanzania and quickly awarded a penalty to Nigeria which Makanjuola stepped forward to convert.

The Coach Salisu Yusuf tutored team held onto the lead to the end of the first half and were cruising to an important away victory but Tanzania was also awarded a penalty of their own in the 81st minute which they dispatched to tie the first leg at 1-1.
