There are palpable fears within the Buhari campaign organization and Rivers State, as Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi’s life appears to be under threat once again.
It was gathered that some people are not comfortable with governor Amaechi’s appointment as the Director General of General Muhammadu Buhari Presidential Campaign Organisation ahead of the 2015 presidential election.
If information at our disposal is anything to go by, the outspoken governor may have been marked for the infamous MKO Abiola’s treatment.
Prompt News recalls that the then military said Abiola had committed treasonable felony, he was arrested and thrown into detention and solitary confinement where he died on 7 July, 1998 under mysterious circumstances.
For expressing personal view that the lingering security challenge could be attributed to corruption in the Military hierarchy, the Rivers governor has come under criticisms from the Presidency, the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and under threat from the security agencies.
Reacting to his opinion, Presidential aide on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, said the statement credited to Amaechi, was “treasonable”.
Few days after, the Defence Headquarters through the Director of Defence Information, Major General Chris Olukolade, also gave strong warning to the governor and other opposition leaders to desist from meddling in the affairs of the military.
The latest reaction came on Monday from the Department of State Services (DSS), which gave what its spokesperson, Marilyn Ogar, said was “last warning”.
Ogar had stated in part, “The attention of the Department of State Services has been drawn to inciting and unguarded statements and utterances by some politicians ahead of the 2015 general elections.
“Of particular interest is the statement of a serving governor calling on men of the armed forces to rise up in protest against constituted authority, with the intent to undermine the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“Their actions which are intended to achieve their desires are irresponsible, selfish and against our collective wellbeing as a nation.
“This statement therefore serves as the last warning to all those seeking to truncate the nation’s democracy by their careless and obviously mischievous utterances and actions to desist and retrace their steps immediately”.
Leading opposition figures have expressed fears that the threat to Amaechi’s life may be opening another ugly vista in systematic efforts to stifle his often-strong opinions on national issues as well to cage the voice of the opposition.
