The ECOWAS Commission and the Ivorian Government have signed an agreement formally awarding the hosting rights of the third ECOWAS Games to the country.
The President of the ECOWAS Commission, Kadre Desire Ouédraogo and the country’s Minister of Youth Development, Sports and Entertainment, Alain Lobognon initialed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at a brief ceremony in Abidjan on Monday 17th June 2013.
Côte d’Ivoire got the nod to host the biennial games at the end of the second edition of the fiesta in June 2012 hosted and won by Ghana. The MOU formalizes the award.
Five sports – athletics, traditional wrestling, handball, volleyball and boxing – feature in the under-23 regional competition, first hosted by Nigeria in September 2010.
The August 2014 Games are expected to be held in Yamoussoukro, the Ivorian political capital.
