A 65-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly having canal knowledge of an eight-year-old girl in the Bara area of the Gulani local government area of Yobe state.
SP Dungus Abdulkarim, the spokesperson of Yobe State Police Command, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday in Damaturu.
According to him, the investigative officers from the Bara Police Divisional Headquarters in Gulani council arrested the suspect following a report of the incident.
The suspect who was identified as Mohammed Yau, a resident of Kojole village, was accused of raping the minor inside an uncompleted building.
He stated that both the victim and the suspect were taken to a health facility for medical and forensic examinations to aid the investigation and the possible prosecution of the suspect in court.
Abdulkarim added that the state commissioner of police, Usman Kamfani Jibrin, condemned the crime and ordered officers of the State Criminal Investigation Department to conduct a thorough and professional investigation.
The commissioner reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting the lives and rights of vulnerable individuals in society, assuring that victims of gender-based violence and child abuse will get justice.
He also called on the public to report any suspicious activities to security agencies and to continue cooperating with security forces in the fight against crime.
