The Super Eagles of Nigeria started their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign on a disappointing note after they played out a 1-1 draw against Lesotho in Uyo on Thursday night.
Jose Peseiro’s side were in ascendancy in the first half but were frustrated by the Lesotho goalkeeper, who was in inspiring form.
Taiwo Awoniyi and Ademola Lookman also missed clear cut opportunities for the Super Eagles.
Lesotho took a shock lead through Motlomelo Mkhwanazi in the 56th minute.
The defender rose highest to nod home Tshwarelo Mkhwanazi Bereng’s corner kick.

The hosts were unable to find the equaliser despite creating a number of chances afterwards.
Nigeria will take on the Warriors of Zimbabwe in their next game in the qualifiers at the Huye Stadium, Butare on Sunday.
