Spain legend Andres Iniesta has admitted that containing Lionel Messi will be an almost impossible task when Spain face Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
The final will pit the reigning European champions against the Copa América holders in the first-ever FIFA World Cup final between the champions of Europe and South America, with both nations aiming to add another world title to their illustrious histories.
Messi, who will captain Argentina in the final, has enjoyed an outstanding tournament despite being 39 years old, registering eight goals and four assists.
The Argentine superstar is joint-top of the goalscoring chart with France forward Kylian Mbappe, who will face England in Saturday’s third-place play-off.
Ahead of Sunday’s final, Iniesta was asked how Spain could contain his former Barcelona teammate. The legendary midfielder admitted that Messi can never be completely neutralised, issuing a warning to La Roja about the threat he poses.
“Shutting him down completely is impossible. It will be more about how much Spain can hurt Argentina with their own game, creating chances, and being clinical when they come along.”
“There are no words, or I just don’t know how to describe it. The determination, conviction, and everything he does in every single game is something you just have to take your hat off to.”
