The FIFA World Cup 2026 reaches its climax on Sunday as reigning champions Argentina face European champions Spain at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
It promises to be a fascinating clash between two of world football’s heavyweights, with Lionel Messi chasing one final piece of history and Spain looking to reclaim the trophy they last won in 2010.
Road to the final
Argentina have shown remarkable resilience throughout the knockout stage. Lionel Scaloni’s men edged Cape Verde 3-2 in the Round of 32, defeated Egypt 3-2 in the Round of 16, overcame Switzerland 3-1 in the quarter-finals and produced another dramatic comeback to beat England 2-1 in the semi-finals.
Spain have arguably been the tournament’s most consistent side. After progressing from a difficult group, La Roja swept aside Austria (3-0), Portugal (1-0), Belgium (2-1) and France (2-0) to book their place in the final, conceding just one goal in the knockout rounds.
The tactical battle
Spain are expected to dominate possession with Rodri orchestrating play from midfield, while the pace and creativity of Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams could stretch Argentina’s defence.
Argentina, meanwhile, will rely on their experience, defensive discipline and quick transitions. Lionel Messi remains the creative heartbeat of the team, with Lautaro Martínez and Julián Álvarez providing the cutting edge in attack. Scaloni’s side have repeatedly shown they can absorb pressure before striking decisively on the counter.

Lionel Messi (Argentina): At 39, the legendary captain could be playing his final World Cup match. Already one of the tournament’s standout performers, another inspirational display could see him lead Argentina to back-to-back World Cup titles.
Lamine Yamal (Spain): The teenage sensation has dazzled throughout the tournament with his pace, dribbling and creativity. His duel with Argentina’s defence could prove decisive.
Rodri (Spain): The midfield general will be tasked with dictating the tempo and limiting Argentina’s opportunities to break.
Emiliano Martínez (Argentina): The goalkeeper has once again delivered in big moments and could become decisive if the final goes the distance.
What is at stake?
Argentina are aiming to become the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend the FIFA World Cup crown, while Spain are bidding for only the second world title in their history after their triumph in South Africa 16 years ago.
