By Harry Awurumibe Following the recent decline in the standard of women football in Nigeria, calls have been made to corporate bodies to join hands with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to reposition the game.
This much was advocated over the weekend in Abuja a top NFF official, Shehu Dikko who appealed to companies, agencies and individuals to come forward to sponsor women football in Nigeria.
The NFF 2nd Vice President and Chairman of the League Management Company (LMC) spoke on Saturday after the Nigeria Women Professional Football League (NWPFL) Champions Cup final between winners, Rivers Angels and Nasarawa Amazons FC at FIFA Goal Project , Abuja National Stadium.
Dikko who was the Special Guest of Honor at the event opined that except sponsors come forward the game will not be able to get to the level it will attract strong followership.
He stated that women football may not develop to the European, Asian and North American standards until corporate bodies are involved in the promotion of the sports.
Meanwhile, Rivers Angels of Port Harcourt beat Nasarawa Amazons of Lagos 5-4 on penalties after both teams could not score in open play.
Nasarawa missed one kick to handover the victory to Rivers.
