Unemployment in Germany stood at 5.9 per cent in November, down by 0.1 percentage points compared to the previous month, the Federal Employment Agency announced on Tuesday.
The number of people out of work in November stood at 2.699 million, according to the agency.
This was 61,000 fewer than in October, but 519,000 more than in November 2019.
The monthly decline nonetheless offered a glimmer of optimism after Germany reinstated sweeping business closures and strict contact restrictions in early November in a bid to break a sustained second wave of Coronavirus infections.
At the start of the pandemic in March, the government launched a multibillion euro furlough scheme in a bid to stave off mass lay-offs and insolvencies. (dpa/NAN)
