A 38-year-old unemployed man, Vincent Emezuom, on Thursday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly stealing a car valued at N2.5 million.
The defendant, who resides at Igando, a suburb of Lagos, was arraigned before Magistrate Mrs B.O Osunsanmi on one-count charge of stealing.
Emezuom, however, denied committing the offence and was admitted to N300,000 bail with two sureties in like sum.
Osunsanmi directed that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two-year tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
The Prosecutor, ASP Ezekiel Ayorinde, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Sept. 20 at Bariga, Lagos.
He said that the defendant stole a Highlander jeep belonging to one Mr Anthony Dike.
Ayorinde said the police accosted him in the process of escaping with the looted car.
“The defendant was intercepted by the police and when questioned, he could not give satisfactory account of the car.
“He was taken to the station as the car was suspected to have be stolen,” he said.
According to the prosecutor, the complainant came to claim ownership of the car.
The offence is a violation of Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 which stipulates three years imprisonment for offenders.
The case was adjourned until Nov. 20 for mention.
