The European Commission on Thursday said that since February it has coordinated the delivery of 66,224 tonnes of material assistance to Ukraine.
This includes 180 ambulances, 125 fire-fighting vehicles, 300 power generators, 35 heavy machinery vehicles and four pontoon bridges.
“We are all horrified by Russia’s atrocities in Ukraine. By providing emergency assistance, we can at least ease the immense pressure on Ukraine’s emergency response systems,’’ Janez Lenarčič, EU commissioner for crisis management said in a statement.
The aid estimated at more than 425 million Euros (439 million dollars) has been provided by the European Union’s 27 member states as well as Norway, Turkey and North Macedonia, and includes medical and shelter equipment.
“This solidarity is the proof that the EU is with Ukraine not only in words but in actions,’’ Lenarčič said.
However, logistic centres were set up in Poland, Romania and Slovakia to facilitate the deliveries, the commission said.
The in-kind assistance to Ukraine is coordinated by the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, under which any country can request assistance from the bloc in case of an emergency. (dpa/NAN)
