The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has confirmed that two children lost their lives in separate fire incidents recorded in Dutse, the Jigawa State capital.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, ASC Badruddeen Tijjani Mahmud, disclosed this in a statement made available on Thursday.
He explained that the first incident occurred in the early hours of March 17, around 4am, at Layin Dabinai area near Masallacin Malam Babba.
According to him, the blaze, whose cause has yet to be determined, spread quickly and engulfed parts of a residence occupied by two children belonging to Aminuddeen Abubakar, an employee of the Federal University, Dutse.
Despite efforts by emergency responders to contain the fire, the victims, aged two and six, were confirmed dead at the scene.
Mahmud further revealed that another fire incident was recorded on March 19 at about 12 noon within the same Gida Dubu vicinity.
Preliminary findings indicated that the second fire started from a spark in the kitchen of a resident identified as Nura Garba, also known as Dangwan Gwan.
The fire reportedly extended to nearby houses owned by Mu’azu Garba and Mohammed Aliyu, popularly called Jaujen Hadejia, destroying sections of their kitchens and roofing structures.
However, no casualty was recorded in the second incident as firefighters swiftly intervened and prevented further spread.
The NSCDC noted that investigations would be conducted to ascertain the causes of both incidents and to recommend measures to avert similar occurrences.
The command condoled with the bereaved family and sympathised with others affected by the incidents, while urging residents to observe safety precautions, especially in handling electrical appliances and open flames.
