Police operatives in Anambra State clashed with armed hoodlums in a late-night gun battle on Saturday, resulting in the arrest of two suspects and injuries to several others.
The confrontation occurred at Uli, Amorka, along the Onitsha-Owerri Road in Ihiala Local Government Area.
According to the police, one pump-action gun and two motorbikes were recovered at the scene.
In a statement on Sunday, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the operation was carried out by a joint security team consisting of officers from the Uli Police Station and local vigilante groups, under the ongoing patrol code-named Operation Udo Ga Chi – Zero Kidnapping.
Ikenga revealed that the suspects—Chigozie Johnson and Umuerima Oguta, both in their early 30s—confessed to being members of a criminal gang and admitted they were on a mission when they were intercepted.
A subsequent search of a nearby bush revealed heavy blood stains, suggesting that some of the gang members fled with gunshot wounds.
In response, the police have urged all hospitals—both public and private—to report any patients presenting with bullet wounds or suspicious injuries.
The command emphasized its commitment to continued patrols and targeted operations aimed at curbing criminal activity across the state.
