Following escalation of attacks between Israel and Iran in the last 12 days, US President Donald Trump has brokered a ceasefire which he says is now in effect.
The announcement on Tuesday, comes after Iran launched several volleys of missiles at Israel, killing at least four people in the southern city of Beersheba.
A senior White House official said Trump had brokered a ceasefire deal in a call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israel had agreed so long as Iran did not launch further attacks.
“On the assumption that everything works as it should, which it will, I would like to congratulate both Countries, Israel and Iran, on having the Stamina, Courage, and Intelligence to end, what should be called, ‘THE 12 DAY WAR’,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social site.
Israel’s military said six waves of missiles were launched by Iran and Israel’s national ambulance service said four people were killed in Beersheba, the first reported deaths in Israel since Trump announced the ceasefire.
REUTERS quoted Iran’s semi-official SNN news agency as reporting that on Tuesday, Tehran fired its last round of missiles before the ceasefire came into effect.
Earlier, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said there’s no agreement on a ceasefire with Israel, but that Tehran will halt attacks if Israel stops its “illegal aggression” by 4am local time (00:30 GMT). Israel is yet to comment publicly.
Iran also fired a salvo of missiles at a military base in Qatar that houses American troops on Monday evening, in retaliation for the US’s attacks on its nuclear sites a day earlier, according to Aljazeera.
