Lagos State Government is set to undertake a major junction improvement project at Toyin/Opebi Road/Allen Junction, Adebola and Salvation, all in Ikeja.
The state Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, made this known at a stakeholders meeting held at the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority Headquarters, Ikeja, on Friday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the stakeholders engagement aimed to minimise inconvenience and ensure smooth project implementation.
Osiyemi said that the project would improve traffic flow in the area, particularly in anticipation of increased traffic volume on completion of the Odo-Iya Alaro project.
“The project, which would span between eight to 10 months, is one that would not only speak to traffic, but would also complement the Odo-Iya Alaro project which, of course, is part of traffic management.
“By the time Odo-Iya Alaro will be finished, the volume of traffic that will be diverted to Opebi/Allen Road, if not well taken care of now, would cause a serious problem,” he said.
The commissioner also said that the government would prioritise the well-being of residents and businesses by implementing the project with empathy and safety considerations.
He said that some buildings would be demolished but gave the assurance that the government would adequately ccompensate affected property owners.
He said that the government would work to provide alternative routes for motorists and residents to access their destinations.
The Permanent Secretary, Office of Physical Planning, Mr Oluwole Sotire, urged stakeholders, particularly those to be affected by the project, to cooperate and avoid actions that might hinder its progress.
He said that the project was a significant step toward improving traffic flow and urban infrastructure.
Mr Isaiah Seun, one of the stakeholders, expressed concerns about compensation for property that might be demolished.
He also expressed concerns about difficulties residents and business owners would experience in accessing their homes and businesses due to road closures and diversions.
He appealed to the government to also ensure that potential environmental impact of construction activities, such as air and water pollution and dust, would be well taken care of throughout the construction period. (NAN).
