The Department of State Services (DSS) has filed terrorism charges against Muhammad Mahdi Shehu, a self-styled activist, at the Federal High Court in Kaduna.
The charges, submitted on Friday, January 17, 2025, came to public notice on Tuesday evening.
In addition to the charges, the DSS filed a motion ex parte seeking permission to detain Shehu for 60 days in accordance with Section 66 of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
Justice Rilwan Aikawa granted the request, allowing the DSS to conclude its investigations while Shehu remains in custody.
The charges against Shehu include making false publications to cause public alarm, disseminating terrorism-related false information, and using social media to spread misinformation that threatens national security.
He is also accused of intentionally disseminating false information and making allegations of treasonable acts, violating sections of the Criminal Code Act, Cybercrimes Act, and the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
The allegations stem from claims that Shehu shared doctored videos falsely accusing the Nigerian government of permitting France to establish a military base in northern Nigeria.
The DSS has described these actions as harmful to national security and a breach of public trust.
