Security was intensified at the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday as lawmakers prepared for a crucial plenary session.
Journalists attempting to gain access to the assembly complex were denied entry. Around 11 a.m., security operatives stopped a correspondent and a journalist from The Cable at the entrance. When questioned about the restriction, a policeman simply responded, “You’re not allowed to enter.” He further insisted that the directive was clear, despite claims that journalists had been invited to cover the session.
A strong security presence was observed both inside and outside the assembly complex, with a combined team of police officers, civil defense personnel, and Lagos State Neighbourhood Security Corps officials stationed at key points. Roads leading to the assembly, including Mobolaji Johnson Avenue, were also barricaded.
Speculation is mounting over the possible resignation of Speaker Mojisola Meranda, which could pave the way for Mudashiru Obasa to reclaim the position. Obasa, who was removed on January 13, 2025, by over 30 lawmakers, returned to the assembly last Thursday, insisting that he remains the Speaker.
The plenary session is scheduled for 1 p.m., and all eyes are on the assembly as political developments unfold.
