Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has raised the alarm over the high number of internal conflicts in various parts of the country, saying the skirmishes are stretching the professional capability of the security agencies.
Speaking Wednesday when he received a delegation from the Peace and Conflict Resolution committee of Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State at the National Assembly, Tambuwal said Nigerians must learn to live in peace with one another.
He said only in an atmosphere of peace and tranquility would meaningful development be achieved.
According to him, the issue of clashes between herdsmen and farmers is something of a serious concern to all Nigerians. He assured that the House of Representatives would, in collaboration with other arms of government, continue to do all that is necessary to tackle all cases of security breaches in the country.
Earlier in his remarks, leader of the delegation, General Emmanuel Eihoda (rtd) lamented the increasing number of attacks on villages by herdsmen, saying as at the last count, over 300 persons have been killed. “In addition, farmlands have been destroyed while countless number of persons have been rendered homeless,” he stated.
While commending the Speaker and the House of Representatives for passing a motion calling on security agencies to end the attacks on Agatu villages, General Eihoda appealed to the lawmakers to follow up on the motion to ensure full compliance.
