Teenage sensations and South East representatives, Jane Onyeneho and Chidinma Agu were the ‘Star Girls’ of the athletics event as both put up impressive performances to win the Girls 100m and 400m on Monday at the on-going National Principal Cup holding at National Stadium Abuja.
Onyeneho dusted her opponents in the 100m race to win Gold medal while Agu easily won the Girls 400m event in the highly competitive field which featured tough athletes from five other geopolitics zones of Nigeria.
Also, the Imo state-born budding athletes were in the South East two relay teams that won two Silver medals in the Girls 4×400m relay and Mixed 4×100m relay respectively.
In the Mixed 1×100m relay event, South South ran 46:83secs to come 1st, South East placed 2nd with 47:26secs while North West ran 47:64secs to place 3rd.
Again, in the Girls 4×400m, South South returned 1st in a time of 4.02.06 to win Gold and South East placed 2nd in the time of 4.03.15 just as North West team came in 3rd in the time of 4.06.73.
Speaking on his athletes impressive performances in Abuja, South East Coach, Agu Marcarus of Imo State Sports Council, Owerri expressed his joy that his athletes are doing themselves proud in Abuja.
Agu who is the biological father of the Girls 400m winner, Chidinma revealed that his athletes would have done better if they have more conducive environment to prepare for the National Principal Cup final in Abuja.
He explained that they did much better during the Zonal qualifiers in Enugu where he said Team Imo athletes did better than others from other states in the zone.
