Vice President Kashim Shettima has expressed his condolences to the people and government of Enugu State following the tragic fuel tanker explosion that resulted in the loss of lives in the state.
Reacting to the incident, Shettima emphasized the need to put an end to the frequent and preventable tanker accidents and explosions in Nigeria.
The tanker, which was involved in the fatal accident, veered off course and erupted in flames along the Ugwu-Onyeama section of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway on Saturday.
In a heartfelt message to the families of those who lost their lives and those injured in the disaster, the Vice President assured that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu shares in the grief and is deeply concerned about the growing number of tanker explosions in recent times.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima said, “It is with great sadness that I received the news of the fuel tanker explosion that took place on Saturday, January 25, 2025, in the Ugwu Onyeama area of Enugu State. I am deeply sorrowful that yet another tanker accident has resulted in the loss of lives and left many others injured in this horrific incident.”
He further noted, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is extremely concerned about the increasing frequency of these tanker explosions, particularly on public roads and near residential areas, which are often avoidable.
” Just as he has directed the relevant authorities to take action in his condolence message on Sunday, I want to reassure Nigerians that the government will take all necessary steps to prevent such accidents in the future.”
