Major General Bamidele Johnson Olawumi (Rtd), a retired military officer, has strongly countered allegations made by Senator Adams Oshiomhole, who claimed that retired generals are involved in illegal mining activities in Nigeria.
Oshiomhole, in a recent media statement, stated, “Those involved in illegal mining are people in high places, including retired generals. These are not unknown people. They are well-known people with private armies who protect their illegal mining sites.”
His comments have sparked widespread backlash, particularly from retired military officers who feel unfairly targeted by his broad accusations.
In a detailed response, General Olawumi condemned Oshiomhole’s remarks as “reckless, baseless, and offensive,” asserting that they tarnish the reputations of retired generals who have served the nation with honor.
“As a retired general who has faithfully served this country, I find Senator Oshiomhole’s comments not only false but a direct insult to my integrity and the legacy of my service. His careless generalizations have subjected retired generals like myself to unwarranted public scorn and suspicion,” Olawumi stated.
The retired general demanded that Oshiomhole provide concrete evidence to support his claims or retract them.
“If he has credible evidence linking any retired general to illegal mining, the proper course of action would be to report such individuals to the Department of State Services (DSS) or other appropriate authorities. Publicly making unfounded accusations without proof is both unpatriotic and irresponsible,” Olawumi added.
Olawumi also called for a public apology from Oshiomhole, emphasizing that the senator’s words have tarnished the honor and integrity of retired officers who have dedicated their lives to serving the nation.
“I demand an immediate apology to all retired generals who have been unfairly maligned by this reckless statement. If he cannot provide evidence to substantiate his claims, Senator Oshiomhole should refrain from making such harmful remarks in the future,” Olawumi declared.
The retired general further warned that Oshiomhole’s comments, given his public stature, could erode public trust in retired military officers and detract from efforts to combat illegal mining in the country.
“Oshiomhole must understand that his words carry significant weight, especially coming from someone of his position. Making unfounded accusations only serves to damage reputations and create unnecessary division,” Olawumi said.
However, General Olawumi reaffirmed his commitment to justice and integrity in retirement, underscoring his unblemished record of service.
The statement has generated considerable reaction, with many urging Senator Oshiomhole to either substantiate his allegations or retract them.
Oshiomhole has yet to respond to the demands made by General Olawumi and other offended parties.
