ABUJA – By Olusegun Lawrence It was a rowdy session on Monday as Nigeria’s House of Representatives reconvened from recess to deliberate on the recent hike in the pump price of petrol.
The House had also invited the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Ibe Kachikwu, to answer questions on what informed the decision to deregulate the oil sector.
But, as the Minister was being invited into the Chamber to make presentation, the lawmakers protested, waving the National flag and singing protest songs.
After about 30 minutes of rowdy session, the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, announced that the House would dissolve into executive session.
Prompt News recalls that the Federal Government’s decision to remove subsidy has been criticised by the Labour Movement, which has also threatened to embark on a nationwide strike should government fails to rescind its decision.
The Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency, PPPRA, last week, announced removal of fuel subsidy as well as a new price regime of N145 per litre as against N86.50 per litre.
