Chijioke Ihunwo, Chairman of Obio-Akpor Local Government Area in Rivers State, has appointed 130 special assistants, marking his second wave of such appointments in just six months.
Ihunwo announced the appointments on Wednesday via a post on X (formerly Twitter), listing Helen Nyekwere, Josephine Wogu, Daisy Worgu, Wagwu Hilda, Ogbonna Stella, Goodness Ogbonna, and Grace Amadi among the newly appointed individuals.
“I congratulate them and urge them to serve diligently in the interest of Obio/Akpor local government. Their appointments take immediate effect,” Ihunwo stated.
This follows his earlier appointment of 100 special assistants in July 2024 during his tenure as caretaker committee chairman of the local government.
Ihunwo, a close ally of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, has sparked political controversies in the past. In October, he oversaw the removal of former Governor Nyesom Wike’s name from the administrative block of the council secretariat.
Wike, currently the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), hails from Rumuepirikom in Obio-Akpor LGA. His ongoing political rivalry with Governor Fubara has fueled a tense power struggle within the state.
