Nigeria secured a spot in the playoff round of the Africa zone of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers following a 1-1 home draw against Cape Verde on Tuesday night.
Victor Osimhen sent fans inside the Teslim Balogun Stadium into frenzy when he put the Super Eagles in front in the first minute slotting home Moses Simon’s corner kick.
Cape Verde equalised five minutes later through Ianique Stopira.
The home team nearly regained the lead through Alex Iwobi in the 11th minute but the Everton’s man sailed wide off target.
Odion Ighalo, Joe Aribo and Moses Simon also came close for the Super Eagles afterwards with Cape Verde goalkeeper Josimar Dias thwarting their efforts.
The Super Eagles failed to carve out any real goal scoring opportunity after the break as they looked contended with seeing out the game.
The Blue Sharks ventured forward in the last 15 minutes of the game but were repelled by the resolute Nigerian defence led by William Troost-Ekong.
The Super Eagles finished top of Group C with 13 points, two more than the Blue Sharks.
