The Anambra State Police Command has apprehended three suspected armed robbers and cultists, recovering weapons, ammunition and a stolen petrol tanker in separate operations across the state.
The Command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday, noting that operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, carried out the arrests on March 21, 2026, at about 1:46pm.
According to him, the suspects were arrested following a raid on a suspected criminal hideout in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area, based on credible intelligence.
Ikenga identified the suspects as Francis Chukwuka Anene (46), Emmanuel Obi (29), and Okoye Chinonso (35), who he described as an alleged serving member of a security agency.
Items recovered from them include two locally fabricated Beretta pistols, four rounds of 9mm live ammunition, and a suspected fake identity card of a security outfit.
He stated that preliminary findings indicate that the suspects are members of a criminal gang allegedly involved in armed robbery, kidnapping, and terrorising residents of Ogidi and surrounding communities.
The police spokesman added that the suspects were also being investigated for possible links to the killing of the late President General of Ogidi.
In a related development, police operatives attached to the Ozubulu Division recovered a suspected stolen white trailer tanker abandoned along the Onitsha/Owerri Expressway in the early hours of March 17, 2026.
Ikenga said the tanker, which had no registration number, was found with its ignition key intact, suggesting it was hastily abandoned by an unidentified individual.
He noted that efforts were ongoing to identify the owner of the vehicle and determine the circumstances surrounding its abandonment, adding that investigations into both incidents were in progress.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Ikioye Orutugu, reaffirmed the Command’s resolve to maintain security, urging residents to support the police with timely and useful information.
