ABUJA – The National Industrial Court on Tuesday, restrained the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) from going ahead with its planned nationwide strike billed to commence on Wednesday.
The order was sequel to a suit brought before the court by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, seeking an order of the court restraining the NLC from going ahead with the strike.
Consequently, the court ordered that the NLC stay action pending the hearing and determination of a suit brought before it by the AGF.
Justice Babatunde Adejumo, the presiding judge, while ruling on an exparte application filed by the AGF on behalf of the federal government ordered parties to maintain the status quo until the hearing and determination of the exparte motion.
According to the AGF, the strike would paralyse the nation’s economy should it be allowed to go on as scheduled.
The AGF also wants the court to decide whether the NLC complied with conditions precedent in law before threatening to embark on strike.
Justice Adejumo directed the applicant to dialogue with the NLC towards an amicable resolution of their dispute.
The case was adjourned to May 24 for hearing of the motion on notice. Meanwhile, no counsel represented the Nigeria Labour Congress.
