Ahead of the national convention of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, northern leaders of the party have announced a consensus candidate for the office of the national chairman.
He is Dr. Iyiorchia Ayu, a former President of the Senate, who is from the north central.
The party’s national convention is slated for October 31, this year.
Ayu emerged the concensus candidate ahead of former Katsina State Governor Ibrahim Shema, Senator Suleiman Nazif from Bauchi State and former Kaduna State Governor, Ahmed Makarfi, who also showed interest in becoming the party’s national chairman.
Prompt News reports that with this development, it appears the party leadership will pick its presidential candidate from the southern part of the country.
Recall that PDP governors from the South had reached an agreement with their counterparts from the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, to demand for return of the presidency to the south in 2023 when President Muhammadu Buhari would have served two terms.
