A Max Air flight suffered a tyre burst while landing at Malam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) on Tuesday night, sparking panic among passengers.
However, all passengers and crew were safely evacuated, with no serious injuries reported.
The incident occurred at 10:57 p.m. when Flight VM1605, which had departed from Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA) in Lagos, made its landing in Kano.
According to an airport source, the plane’s tyre burst upon landing, prompting immediate action from emergency response teams to ensure the safe evacuation of everyone onboard.
Reports indicate that the nose landing gear tyre may have been the one affected, contributing to the incident.
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) is expected to investigate the cause further.
A passenger Abdullahi Ibrahim, who was onboard, described the tense situation saying that “there was a loud noise and the plane shook violently as soon as we landed. Many passengers started praying, but the crew reassured us that everything was under control. We’re just grateful to be safe.”
Max Air representatives were not immediately available for comment, but aviation experts have weighed in on the incident, noting that while tyre bursts can be alarming, they are not uncommon in air travel.
Aviation analyst, Kabiru Ali explained, “Tyre bursts can be caused by factors like runway conditions, excessive wear, or the impact during landing. The important point is that there were no fatalities, and the crew handled the situation well.”
Following the incident, airport authorities have resumed normal operations at Kano airport, while efforts continue to remove the aircraft from the runway.
