LAGOS – By Victoria Hanson The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has said that it is more concerned with the safety of lives and property on Nigerian roads rather than the sale of speed limiting device billed to be introduced in May, 2016.
FRSC Corps Marshal, Boboye Oyeyemi, who disclosed this on Saturday, also said determining the price of the speed limiting device was not the Corps responsibility.
Oyeyemi said 65 percent of road crashes in Nigeria Involve commercial vehicles hence, the enforcement of speed limiting device would start from them.
He cited one of the major transporters in the country, ABC Motors, has having an incomparable safety record because of respect for speed limit.
Oyeyemi said interaction with the ABC management showed that their buses have not been involved in any accident in the last six years.
He said because of respect for speed limit, the company saves not less than N1.8 million on fuel as speed control cuts down on fuel consumption by vehicles.
“The UN has set standards that are to be met by all countries in terms of road safety and crashes.
“It is important to meet UN requirements on road crashes.
“The Corps is not fixing cost of speed limiter.
“Our major focus is reducing the number of road crashes in the country.
“We are very concerned about this. So also is the President very concerned.
“That is why he has given us all the support we need to tackle this challenge on our roads,” Oyeyemi said.
